The Holbeck Ghyll Hotel in Windermere has had a planning application approved to extend the dining room in order to create a more comfortable and relaxed experience for its guests, aswell as a new cocktail loungeto enjoy pre-meal drinks.

The extension should further exchange what is recognised as one of the UK’s best restaurants, which won the prestigious Michelin star again this year for the 10th consecutive year.

The Landale Chase Hotel on Lake Windermere is being featured as the focus of a 12 part documentary series ‘The Lakes’.  The series about Cumbria and The Lake District started on the 4th of January 2010 ad will be shown on ITV1 at 8pm on Mondays until March.  The staff at the Langdale Chase Hotel provide the main human interest element of the series, with Managing Director Thomas ‘The Gladiator’ Noblett attempting to swim the length of lake Windermere before attempting to swim the English Channel.

Lake District residents and hoteliers Lain and Jackie Garside has raised £2500 to help victims of the recent floods after the own home in Bowness was flooded by Windermere’s rising waters at the end of last year.

The couple who previously owned the Rothay Garden Hotel, Grasmere, Miller Howe Hotel Windermere and Fayrer Garden Hotel Bowness came out of retirement by purchasing the 4-star Wordsworth Hotel  in Grasmere.

Mr Garside organised by New Year lunch at their hotel for other fellow Lake District hoteliers and raised over £2500 for the Cumbrian Flood Recovery Fund.

After 30 years reporting or local news in the Lake District, the Lakeland Echo closed its doors in December with a celebration event at the Hydro Hotel Windermere organised by the paper’s founder Andrew Wilson.

Many staff and supporters turned out for the event which signalled the end of an era in Lakeland journalism.  Mr Wilson now plans to sponsor a Lakeland Echo prize at the annual Lakeland book of the year awards.
